Hi there people. I have bought new hard disk drive and I have attached it correctly to the motherboard. I have looked over twice just to make my self sure. It is Maxtor 120gb SATA drive. But, it seems that new hard drive requires something more on order to start working. XP is blind for it I guess. It just won’t show up when I open My Computer, but the BIOS is telling me that the drive is present as IDE1. Some things definitely aren’t quite enough clear to me…..

Well, here I am to help you. Every new hard drive comes without anything on it. Literally anything. It just has free space and without any logical drive prepared for use, there isn’t any drive letter assigned to it, which is required for Explorer to identify the drive. Because of that, you’ll need to enter the Disk management utility. Right click on the real My Computer icon, not the shortcut, and select option “manage”. When there, you will be able to see your new drive. Select it and create new logical drives first. Format the drive and assign the drive letter to it, and that should be the whole procedure.
