Let me just first say I have very little experience with networking, so please be patient with me. The situation is this: My laptop has an in-built wireless router, which I'm trying to use to set up a local network, connecting to some other wireless users. However, I'm not detecting any networks at all, even though I'm literally next to the other machines. What's going on here? Thanks, and sorry if I'm missing something obvious.

You should've specified what laptop, what OS, what router, what kind of a network setup… but on what you have said, I can only recommend you make sure your network card is not disabled. This happens often if the laptop was by default not-networked. Also, you could check to see if your firewall is somehow blocking detection. Other than that, I'd really need to know more about the situation at hand.
