I'm starting to hear some sort of weird noises form the computer, somehow like grating and grinding, and when I turn it off, they're gone… it's freaking me out a little, to be honest. I've never opened the case myself, so I'm not sure if I should do it now just to look inside and try to see what's wrong. Neither do I want to call the store and complain about hearing things. What do you guys say? Can this be a symptom of something serious, or do I just wait it out?

Waiting it out won't help (and it usually doesn't, IMX). The way you describe it, my money would be on the cooling fans. Sometimes as they grow old or dusty, they start grating against the holding surface, and cause the kind of noise that you're hearing. You'll probably need to replace a fan or two, which really isn't too hard.
