Hello! I am on collage now and my friends and I have a question for you. My roommate, I and friends from another room (next room to our room) want play games in our own workgroup. Can you tell me what we need to do to make this possible? I assume that we need to make local area network, but I am not completely sure.

Hello! You will need to connect your computers to local area network. I suggest you to connect your computers through router. Your computers need to be in same workgroup. On router you will need to forward one port for playing games and that is all. As you can see it is nothing complicated.
