I'm connecting my LAN to the internet through a Netgear router, and it's working OK, generally speaking, except recently I've found that on one machine (out of 4) the internet explorer browser won't open every other page, approximately. The 404 error is what we get, but after a few refreshes (or cache clearing), sometimes it does open the page. The other machines have no such problem. Could this be a hardware problem of some kind, like faulty cables or something?

Doubtful. IMHO, it could be one of two things, or a combination of both: Firewall configuration, or IE settings. Try disabling all firewalls on the client in question, and on the router as well, just to see if anything changes; if it does, you'll need to reconfigure the firewalls. If that's not it, than it's probably an internal IE issue, which you can verify by trying another browse (and while you're at it, why not stay with this other browser).
