On my Acer Travel Mate C3O2XM, I sometimes get the following message at startup: "Failed to detect infrared device". What does this mean? I thought it may be referring to the stylus, but it's obviously not, as it's still functioning normally. If that's not it, what is? Do I need to be alarmed? The machine is on Windows XP, BTW. Thanks for any assistance you may offer.

I take it you didn't add any new hardware recently? How about BIOS updates? It's possible that the IrDA port is just being recognized mistakenly, and an error being reported even though there's no actual malfunction. It's also possible (though not likely IMO) that for some reason you have "ghost" hardware or ports, which you should then locate in BIOS or in the OS and disable to stop the messages at start up form appearing.
