What exactly is this file? If it's some sort of help file, as its name suggests, then it can't be essential to the system, right? I ask because I can't load Win 98 any more, and I get an error message saying that some files are missing or corrupted, and it lists ifshlp as the only one. Any suggestions would be appreciated…

I don't really know what Win98 system files do, but I know the probable cause of your problem. When system files are reported as "missing or corrupted", they are usually neither. Instead, the registry and the rest of the configuration has gone haywire, and look for those files in wrong locations. To restore this, go to the command prompt (from boot, not the DOS prompt within Windows) and enter the following: "scanreg /restore". That should reset the startup configuration to the last previously successful one.
