It's like the subject line says – for some reason I can't ping the server externally. It's a local gaming server, and what happens is if you try to ping it to see if it's working, you get squat. But, if you still try to connect to it, it works and you can (connect, not ping). I haven't changed any network or router settings before this started happening. Any advice would be great.

Well, to get the obvious out of the way first – what firewall are you using, and are you sure it's properly configured? Also, what exactly are those network/router settings that you didn't change – how're you tagging your server, via dynds.org or what? Also, to make sure the ports are OK, you should use nmap to scan and confirm this.
