It's just appalling to see the amount of garbage cluttering up the web today. It's like everyone and their dog have a website or three that they want you to visit. Among all that, how is an enterprising webmaster supposed to promote his site and convince the world that it is more worthy of attention than the countless others? I'm not looking for advice here, I'm just theoretically interested in hearing how this seemingly impossible task can be accomplished.

Well, I guess the most popular methods would be link exchange, banner advertising, and web ring membership. I'm sure there are others, too. Exchanging links is fairly self explanatory – you link to my site so I would link to yours; it can get ridicules on some blogs. Banner advertising is efficient, though not always cheap; make sure your banners are catchy but not irritating, and don't advertise with the wrong crowd. Web rings is like link exchange, except you are linked circularly, each to two other sites, and more importantly, all websites in the ring share a certain theme.
