Hello. I keep getting an unknown (to me) error message when I try to log into my system: "{location}\Hal.dll missing or corrupt. Please re-install a copy of the above file."
I thought it must've been some sort of virus corruption or something to that account, so I tried replacing this file with one from the Win XP install CD, but it doesn't happen – I'm going by the book and I when get to the recovery console, I enter the replacement command (expand d:\{something}\hal.dll c:\{something}\hal.dll.), but that just freezes the machine. I don't know what to do any more, so I'm sort of panicking now. Some help, please?

Hi there. The problem you're having usually has little or nothing to do with actual hal.dll file corruption. Most often, it's caused by the boot.ini file, which is meant to regulate the way your OS starts up, but can sometimes get a little screwy so it starts thinking it sees multiple instances of the OS. Try the following: When you get to the command prommpt, type "bootcfg / list"; then, if it tells you that boot.ini is missing, you'll need to recreate it by typing "bootcfg /rebuild". When it shows you the installation data and asks for what to do with it, you should answer this way: At the first prompt, just enter Y(es); at the second one, enter the full name of your OS, such as "MS Windows XP Pro", or whatever you have; at the third prompt, enter "/fastdetect". You're all done now, so type "exit" and let it try to reboot. Tell us what happens.
