I got this used external Maxtor HDD, but when I tried connecting it to my laptop, I found out that the only connector that came with it doesn’t have the right kind of port. I checked out some pictures on the net to compare, and I think it’s what they call a “Firewire” port. My machine only has USB ports, as far as I can tell. Isthere any way to somehow circumvent this and connect the two, or am I screwed?

What, you couldn’t just get another cable at a local shop? I mean, they’re like $10. Alternatively, if you’ve already gotten used to the one you have now, just get a port hub of some sort. It should have an USB out on one side, and a FW in on the other. Stick it between the two pieces of hardware, and you’re all set.
