I'm having difficulties installing a 40GB Maxtor HDD externally, via a USB port. When I plug it in, it is immediately recognized by Windows, but then when I provide the drivers that it wants (the ones I got with the HDD), I get the enlightening message saying "device cannot be installed". What am I doing wrong here?

First thing, are there adjustable jumper settings on the drive? Make sure you've got them at the right settings, according to your hw docs, Second, if that doesn't work, make sure it's not an IRQ conflict of some kind. See if you can make it work on another USB port, or via a USB hub, so that the shared address doesn't bother it any more.
