On Windows XP, I sometimes get the message saying "explorer.exe has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down". When I clikc OK, my machine usually freezes. I don't know why this message keeps popping out, because I'm not using Internet Explorer any more (I'm on Mozilla now), and I haven't used Windows Explorer either for a long time (using Win Commander instead). I tried reinstalling the Win Explorer, but that didn't help. Is the exporer.exe part of the error message referring to IE or WE? How do I get it to stop bothering me?

I'm really not an expert on this, but I'll try to explain my understanding of things as best I can. Explorer.exe isn't actually (just) a program, it's one of Windows' "services", which are like components of sorts, and I think one of the essential ones too. So, you can't solve a problem with it by just reinstalling it – you'd have to reinstall the whole OS, which is a lot of work. BTW, Windows Explorer is AFAIK basically the same thing as Internet Explorer, the web browser's just stripped down and adapted for local use.
