My machine seems to be screwed up badly. When I start it up, I can see only the message saying explorer.exe has caused an application error in some module, and the desktop wallpaper behind it. I can move my mouse around, but I can't bring up the start menu, and when I click OK in the error message window it doesn't go away. What’s wrong, and how do I fix it? Will I have to reinstall XP? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

First, start up in safe mode to see if you can get anything working at all. You do this by holding F8 while the system boots up, and then choosing the safe mode option when a selection is offered. Then, once in Safe Mode, you need to run both a virus scan and an adware/spyware scan. If you don't have an AV (anti-virus) program, well, you should. You can download some cleaning software off the net for free. Once you do, run them one by one and follow instructions to have them scan your system and tell you what exactly went wrong and why.
