editing a mpeg file problem

I have a typical beginners’ problem - I do not know how I can edit a mpeg file. There are many other things I do not know how to do too, but somewhere I have to start  SO, I need to make a video for my friend, but I have to change original file a bit.Do you know how. Thanks in advance

Hey there. There are many programs that you can download and make whatever changes you want to make to your mpeg video. But, as I know mpeg file is from some strange reason very difficult to handle, so you may want to compress it or do something else with it. I have heard that when editing it, some weird issues may occur, per example trouble with audio output, or with the brightness of the video. So, however weird it may seem, maybe the best solution is transferring it to lets say avi first and than editing it afterwards But, don’t listen to me, you may want to check both solutions and see which one has better results.
