What is the difference between digital zoom and optical zoom? Which one should we use, normally?

Optical zoom refers to the lens physically changing the focal length. Your image details will most likely be excellent, but you may get some slight “changes” in your image, for example more flatness, etc.

Digital zoom crops the image from the center of the sensor and enlarges it. There is less detail in the digital zoom image, since it is created using only a portion of the pixels available on the sensor. However the good point is that you do not need good lenses to be able to zoom digitally.

Which you should use depends on your preference, and your lenses.
