cannot play .wmv anymore

What could be the reason my PC won’t play .wmv anymore? It was working fine and I could play them regularly, and after I’ve been cleaning up the mess in my PC something happened. Now several programs won’t work including files with this extension. Do you have any idea what could be the problem? Do I have to reinstall my Windows? Thanks.

I really don’t think that this situation calls for such desperate measures such reinstalling Windows. Only in case you haven’t done that several months. Otherwise this can be solved by running that error test and waiting for the answer from Microsoft support group. Another thing is that you’ve probably deleted certain codecs necessary for playing those files. You can check that if you run this little application called GSpot. It checks the file you want and lists number of codecs necessary for playing it. It also informs you whether you have them installed or not. After you find out, you can install the necessary codecs again. Another thing is to try and play the files with VLC media player which is specialized for playing all formats, even the broken and incomplete files.
