Solving Problem With QuickTime Plug-in in FireFox

Sometimes when you try to play Flash animation or video in FireFox, it causes a freezing or even browser crash. This problem is often related with QuickTime Plug-in in Mozilla FireFox.

These are a few steps on how to solve this annoying problem and enable QuickTime Plug-in working normally in FireFox browser, presuming that you have Flash Plug-in and Flash player installed properly.
 

Step One (that usually helps)

  1. Close Mozilla Firefox completely (File > Exit)
  2. Open QuickTime
  3. Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences
  4. Select "Browser Plug-in" from the drop-down list
  5. Click on the button that says "MIME Settings"
  6. Expand the "Miscellaneous" file format section by clicking on the "+" on the left
  7. Uncheck "Flash file"
  8. Click "Apply" and then "OK"
  9. Close QuickTime
  10. Open Mozilla Firefox

To see current and available Plug-in, in the Addressbar, type: about:plugins
Look for "swf" files and if Flash Player or Macromedia Shockwave/Flash isn't the handler, you should go to the Plug-in folder and delete that Plug-in dll.



Step Two (that sometimes helps)


Another solution is to force the Plug-in to select FlashPlayer as the default handler. This solutions requires you to type about:config in the Addressbar and look for browser.helperApps.alwaysAsk.force and set that to true (by double clicking on it if it's set to false) This solution didn't work for me.


Step Three (if One or Two didn’t help)


In the folder Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/Plugins you’ll find a file called: npqtplugin9.dll

Delete that file and the installed Flash should handle the rest. This should be the last solution.

For QuickTime 6.5

  1. Close all instances of FireFox
  2. Launch QuickTime
  3. Go to Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences
  4. Select "Browser Plug-in" from the Drop-down Menu
  5. Click "Mime Settings"
  6. Enable the file types you wish QuickTime to handle. Disable Flash.
  7. Click "OK"
  8. Select "Connection Speed" in the Drop-down Menu
  9. Choose the connection that best matches your current Internet connection speed
  10. Click OK


For QuickTime Alternative less than 1.5

  1. Close all instances of FireFox
  2. Go to the Start Menu > QuickTime Alternative > QuickTime Settings
  3. Select "Browser Plug-in" from the Drop-down Menu
  4. Click "Mime Settings"
  5. Enable the file types you wish QuickTime to handle. Disable Flash.
  6. Click "OK"
  7. Select "Music" from the Drop-down menu
  8. Select "General Midi" *
  9. Select "Connection Speed" in the Drop-down Menu
  10. Choose the connection that best matches your current Internet connection speed
  11. Click OK


For QuickTime 7 and QT Alternative 1.5 and higher

  1. Close all instances of FireFox
  2. Go to Start > Control Panel > QuickTime 7
  3. Go to the Audio Tab
  4. If using Alternative, select "General Midi" under "Music Synthesizer"
  5. Go to the Browser tab and click "Mime Settings"
  6. Enable the file types you wish QuickTime to handle. Disable Flash.
  7. Click OK
  8. Go to the Streaming tab
  9. Choose the connection that best matches your current Internet connection speed
  10. Click OK

Note: * - Selecting General Midi is necessary as QuickTime Alternative does not include the QuickTime Music Synthesizer.
