A motherboard in your computer is one of the most important (maybe even the most important) part of your system. It is crucial to pick a good motherboard, especially for gaming computers where gamers use their computer components up to maximum. Your motherboard can be the one that holds everything in one piece, but if chosen wrong it can break your whole system down.

The motherboard is a hub of the computer, where all other components connect to. Since your motherboard is very important for your system, buying the best one you can afford is absolutely a good investment.

Before buying a motherboard you should first check out some things. I suggest you to first choose your CPU. Choosing CPU is a thing that you need to do before you choose your motherboard. The main reason why you need to do that is because a motherboard will support only one type of processor, like Pentium 4 or Athlon 64. Also, there is a physical difference between different processors. Because of that you can’t just put a wrong kind of processor in motherboard, it just won’t fit. You should also know that many motherboards will only support up to a certain speed of a certain processor model. Another important thing you should remember related to CPUs is a CPU socket type. To be sure that your processor is compatible with a particular motherboard, you need to check the socket type. The socket type is basically the processor interface for your CPU.

Ok, let’s move on. The next thing related to your motherboard is memory and hard drive. You will either want to get DDR SDRAM or RDRAM, and at least 1GB worth (I suggest at least 2 GB for good gaming performance). Of course, before buying a motherboard you should check what type and amount of memory does your motherboard support. Motherboards also have different types of connections for your hard drive. Common drive formats are ATA and SATA, my suggestion is SATA and at least 160GB large.

When you are choosing your motherboard you need to think ahead for many things. One of these things is absolutely Graphic Card. There are two different ways to connect a Graphics Card to a motherboard, through an AGP slot or a PCI Express slot. You can choose between AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) that has been the standard for a long time, and the new PCI Express technology that is slowly taking over the scene, as it is much faster than AGP. It’s your choice, either will do fine.

Other things related to your motherboard are not as much important, but are also things that are very useful and needed. Those things are PCI slots and USB ports and also built-in video, sound and networking capabilities. The PCI slots on a motherboard are there to accommodate add-on cards such as a sound card, Ethernet card, or modem. Make sure you have enough PCI slots for your needs. You should also consider the number of USB ports you need. As for the built-in video and sound card, that’s ok and can save you money. But I suggest you to use a separate graphic card (on-board cards are not good enough for newer 3D games). The built-in sound card should fit your needs.

And for the conclusion, once again you have to think ahead. When buying motherboard you should check if it allows you to upgrade it, either with new graphic card or with more RAM. If you plan to upgrade your processor, be sure your motherboard will support a faster processor. There are lot motherboard manufacturers, but the best ones are ASUS, ABIT, MSI, and Gigabyte.
