Converting .wps (Microsoft Works) files to .doc (Microsoft Word) files

WPS files are Microsoft Works files similar to Microsoft Word .DOC files. So actually, .WPS files are text files but not so sophisticated and with less formatting options.

WPS files are created with Microsoft Works Word Processor, but are rather seen in some other, more approachable document file as Microsoft Word .DOC files.

People say that some versions of MS Word can easily open WPS files but in most cases that is not true. If you want to open your WPS file in MS Word you will need to convert it first to .DOC file.

Here are some solutions given by Microsoft that will help you open your WPS files if you don’t have Microsoft Works program. MS Windows are required for these converters to work.

  1. Microsoft Works 6-9 file converter – You can open and edit WPS files in MS Word
  2. Word Viewer 2003 – An application that opens Word documents but can also open .WPS files

Another way of doing this conversion is to do it directly from MS Word (but it might not work for every version). To open .WPS files in Word follow these instructions:

Open MS Word --> go to Tools --> Options --> General tab --> check Confirm Conversion When Open --> click OK.

Now open the .WPS file and choose the appropriate converter.

Finally and fortunately there is one other way of doing the .WPS à .DOC conversion. It’s probably the easiest way to covert it because you do it online and all you have to do is pick the file you want and convert it to file that you need. You can find that online converter on Zamzar page. It can convert .WPS to .doc, .odt, .pcx, .pdf, .png, .ps and to .txt documents. This converter is very useful and as you can see it can convert .WPS to many different files.
