I'm trying to set up my Xbox over at my gf's place, but it's not working. All I get is "check cable". I actually did check them again, and what do you know, they were fine. So that’s not it, obviously. What else am I looking at here? Router configuration trouble, maybe? I'm pretty sure I forwarded the ports correctly…

Maybe, yes. But your router may also just be incompatible with XBL. You can check that here: http://www.xbox.com/LIVE/connect/routers.htm. Also, when it tells you to check cables, it doesn't mean you should just check whether or not you plugged them in (Rolling Eyes). You should also check if the cables are functional (try them on another connection), and whether or not you're using the right kind of cable (straight, not crossover).
