I have sort of a weird problem with this used Xbox360 that I got off a friend. It won't turn on when I press the power button, I need to press the open case button instead but more importantly, it shuts down randomly during play! This second part was never an issue at my friend's place. BTW, the Xbox is not modded at all. Any thoughts?

Not sure, but this sounds like the connectors on the power button died, or at least are heavily damaged. This could explain both parts of your problem. Or maybe it's something to do with the power cable? In any case, I don't think you should deal with it personally, I'd take it in for repair, bite the bullet and cash up.
