I'm worried about file security on my LAN. Specifically, about the Win2K's apparent lack of ability to password separate shared files. I need to share them, but I'm not sure I want to be open to the possibility of someone unauthorized gaining access to a remote machine and then to all the shared files. I've never set up a network before, it's possible I'm missing something, so tell me – does Win 2000 support this or not?

I don't think it does, but I'm not sure how big of a deal this is. You can still set up access rights on directories that store those shared files, which is effectively password protection. If you really need individual file protection, try googling out a program called Fine Crypt, it night be what you're looking for.
