It's basically all there is. When I try starting it up, it crashes just as it loads all the thingies it needs to load. There's no error message or code or anything, it just tires to start, fails, crashes, and that's it. It's Office XP, BTW. Any ideas on how to handle this one?

Most of the times Word crashes the way you describe it, it's due to template corruption of some kind. To verify if it's the case, you need to try running it without any templates or add-ons loaded. To do this, go to the Start menu, click "Run", and then enter the following: winword.exe /a
If it runs OK that way, go to this page and follow instructions to troubleshoot the issue: http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm
