I've installed Windows and Word XP on a machine with 256 MB RAM and now when I try to open word it goes extremely slowly and then blocks my pc so that I have to restart it. Did anyone have this kind of a problem? What should I do?

I think that running XP on a 256mb machine can't be good. You definitely ought to buy more RAM. But still this should not happen that way – maybe you could apply the latest service pack update to Win XP and see if it helps. Have you tried reinstalling Word? If you haven't, that's definitely another option you should try.
