What is "windows subsystem" anyway? I ask because I get this error message, with "16 bit windows Subsystem" in the captions - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications.
This happens when I try running some older software that I got backed up form my previous machine. It used to work fine under Win 98, but now in XP, the above is what I'm getting. Clue me in, someone?

Basically, what that message is saying is that Windows XP doesn't support 16-bit applications. It shouldn't even be trying to start it that way, there should be a file called autoexec.nt which is used to simulate a DOS environment when necessary. If you don't have it in your system folder, check your repair folder for a copy. If youd on't find it there … you're shit out of luck, I guess. Just kidding – in that case do a google search for autoexec.nt, and there should be a text version which you can copy to notepade and save under that name in C:\Windows\System\System32\.
