It just sits there and won't start. The logo icon spins, but nothing seems to be happening, and it's in limbo even when I go offline, I actually had to use End Task to get it to stop. Could this be a temporary network congestion issue (last Wednesday, around midnight CET)? I wouldn't expect MS to have server issues like that… but if it's not that, then there's something wrong on my end, right?

I don't think it's a temporary thing, IIRC I had my update right about that time and everything went OK for me. If I had to guess what's blocking the update for you, I'd put my money on the firewall. Make sure you have all firewalls off, except possibly the Windows default one if you're using that.
