Well, I think Windows XP Service Pack 2 is important update to the operating system, although your PC could work quite fine even without it ( if maintained well ). For some newer machines I think it is necessity considering increasing security threats present on internet. It is mostly security update but it contents some OS new features like integrated Bluetooth and infrared support which are represented like new icons in Control Panel. Now, RC1 mark is for Release Candidate 1 version which means that it was first beta version available for beta testers and is outdated at the moment, after final version is available for quite some time. As for the older machines, such is yours I would recommend not to press with it or even give up from idea depending of how old your computer is. I personally had serious problems when trying to install it on machines with CPU slower than 1,3 Mhz. It could be dangerous since this can lead to system instability.
