While searching for some info on Windows update, I stumbled upon an abbreviation: Win XP SP2 RC1. Now, I know what most of this means, but I’ve never heard of RC 1. What does this stand for? If it’s a new update, who is it aimed for, how come I never heard of it, do I need it, and where do I get it?

Your source of info is outdated. RC1 stands for “Release Candidate 1”, meaning it was one of the almost fiished versions of Service Pack 2, like post-beta or something. Of course, since SP 2 was released approximately 2 years ago (thereabout, anyway), there’s no point in locating and downloading the “release candidate 1” version of it.
