I have some data backed up on CDs. I tried to retrieve this data from CD but I was not able to accomplish that. Windows gave me some cyclic redundancy error when I tried to copy files from CD to hard drive. It looks like I have lost this data but I wonder why CD-R discs become unreadable after some time?

This is completely normal behavior. CD and DVD media are not designed to hold data for infinite amount of time but between 2 and 5 years which depend on media quality, handling and storage (dry place without direct sun light ). So, they are not the best option available for backing up important data.
