Who created SNS-PDA-Second Life technology?

There is a phenomenon that has amazed me very much recently. Its name is Second Life and I’d like to learn something more about it. This far I have understood that it is a kind of online community where people create fictional characters which communicate with other 3D fictional characters in the virtual world. Is it something like The Sims or not? Who actually created this whole technology?

Hm, I think that it resembles The Sims in a way but I think that in The Sims you create the whole community, but in this case this is an online game and millions of other people create other inhabitants of this virtual world as well as its buildings and there is not an end like in The Sims. It is really fascinating and despite the fact that some people believe that this will bring about even higher level of alienation among the people in the real world I think that if it is used only as a game it can be very interesting and creative. I think that Linden Lab has patented and created Second Life technology.
