I’m about to set up a machine for my baby brother, but I need some advice on what OS I should get him to use. He’s had zero computer experience (he’s only 7), so I really want to have him start with something easy to understand and relatively secure (so he doesn’t have to learn the hard way about internet virus hazards). On my own rig, I have both FC 4 and Win XP running, but I’ve had little experience with other OSs, so I’m open to suggestions. Keep in mind, though, that this will be a very low-grade machine, so no fancy stuff.

Well, how low are you planning to go here? I mean, any particular specifications? If the ease of use is your main concern, you should hook him up with Win 98, I guess almost anything can run that today. I wouldn’t call that OS safe by any stretch of imagination, of course. However, if you get him not to use the default browser/mail client, and install an always-on firewall, he should be safe enough I think.
