I have recently started running out of space on my hard disk. I have heard flash drives can help with storage capacity. However, I am really not sure what type of data they can carry. If anyone could tell me what do they store on such drives, that would be great. Thanks very much in advance.

Flash drives can somewhat help giving you extra storage. However, they are not meant to be used like hard drives, with data you are currently using being placed there. That means it would be extremely bad idea to plug in a flash drive and install a game you want to play on it. They are excellent for moving various documents, movies, photos, and similar stuff you are currently not using. Also, they can be used instead of burned disks and diskettes, as they can carry any type of data, while being more secure than the two.
