What is IP address?

Hi there. I have heard for so called IP address that computers have, but I have no clue for what is IP address used for. My logic tells me that there is something between email and IP address for example. Maybe I rely on mail and street address, and these has nothing to do with the similarity.. Anyway, I need some few words that do describe true meaning. Thanks to all, so much.

Hello. Your sense for similarity is good. Full word is Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol or TCP/IP. Internet Protocol address is nothing more or less than the location of the particular computer or server over the Internet. Without IP addressing, there would be no such thing called WWW. When someone knows your IP address and your domain on which your computer is attached, than he can reach you on several different, good or bad ways. The computers that are standalone or that arent connected to any local area networks or dont have internet connection, the IP address is not needed at all.
