What are the most common causes, I mean? I’m trying to establish what’s wrong with my connection, and why it turned sour so suddenly. At first I thought it was my router, but then I tried plugging the modem in directly into the computer, and the problem persisted. I tried contacting the ISP (Comcast), but they were of no use, as usual, and said the problem must be on their end of the line.

There are literally hundreds of possible causes of something so vague and common as “modem disconnect”. You really need to narrow it down a little, give us some details. Are the connection drops happening at random, or at set intervals? Are the drops accompanied by speed problems, or 404-type errors? Are there any other specifics? What kind of modem/router combo are you using? How about firewalls and anti-virus programs?
