I got the following error message at startup the other day: "disk boot failure, insert disk and press enter". By the time I got a friend to look at it, the problem seems to have magically solved itself. My machine is relatively new (couple of months), so I don't think I should expect any serious malfunction from "natural causes". Is there something I could've done to the computer for it to develop this problem?

Actually, there's more things that can cause a MESSAGE about boot failure than actual boot failure. For example, if your boot order is set to "A, C, D" or so, than any time you forget a non-bootable floppy disc in the drive, the machine will attempt to boot off it (and fail, of course). Similar if it's set to boot of a CD first, and you leave a non-bootable CD in the drive. But, since the problem "solved itself", my money would be on loose IDE cables connecting the HD to the motherboard.
