I’m a total newbie when it comes to VPN so I’d really appreciate your help! I’m trying to connect my new laptop to my desktop from outside. I’ve turned down all firewalls to make this less complicated. I’m running WinXP Pro on my desktop and have a netgear wgt624 with recently upgraded firmware. I’m trying to set port forwarding but something seems to be wrong. Could anyone please offer me some help with this – perhaps some kind of a guide on how this is performed. I have PPTP, using TCP & UDP on port 1723~1723, going to my desktop IP and I am forwarding ports 47 and 500 to it (TCP & UDP), but I’m not sure this is correct since it’s not working.
As far as I know VPN passthrough is used when the client inside wants to be able to connect to a device that’s outside and it can’t be used when devices inside want to pass through to a device on the inside – in other words they can’t initiate the session. You’ll need a router that is capable of both running VPN and allowing connections to your router at the same time.
