At the same time, I mean? I heard form a friend who heard it on the internet somewhere that if you have to virus scanners at once, they sort of interfere with each other, and neither one works right, and I'm left without protection. She says it's called "resource conflict", I think. Is this true? Is it only if I turn them both on at the same time, or does it happen even if one of them is off but installed on the same computer?

The short answer would be no, this does not happen. The only way one anti-virus application would "interfere" with another would be if the other one was itself infected, in which case it could quarantine or delete some files that would cause it to stop working (just like any other program). There's no resource conflict here because it's pretty much impossible that both applications call upon the same virus database when scanning … not to mention there's absolutely no reason to have them both active at the same time, that can just slow the system down.
