At the moment, I have both browsers installed and I'm using them interchangeably – mainly Opera, but since it has that ugly flaw of refusing to open some random pages, I find myself switching to the Internet Explorer now and again. The problem is, I recently heard that there was some inherent security risk in having both browsers installed and working? What's that about? Should I drop one, just to be on the safe side?

No need. You probably picked up some loose ends of the heated debates over that "Firefox plus IE equals security loophole" that was around a while ago. So, first of all, it's not Opera, and second of all, even if it were Opera, the problem was fixed through patching, updating, and the like.
