Hey guys. Virgin user of Ubuntu, trying to install, having trouble with resolution/color depth. The thing is, I can only jack up the resolution to 1280x1024 if I reduce the color depth to 16-bit. I can only go to max color depth on a resolution of 800x600 or lower. On the same sysrem, but on the Win XP partition, all resolutions can be used normally. Am I missing something obvious?

Not really obvious, no, but this is a relatively common issue. What you want to do is edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and add the desired mode. You should see a list of modes there (combinations of resolution and color depth). If the one you want isn’t there, just add it using the same synthax.
