I have an old Apple computer bought off e-bay for small change recently, and it works OK, except for one small thing: No matter what I plug into its USB, it's not recognized. No response whatsoever from the system (OS 9), though it does recognize the USB card itself (Keyspan). I tried the card on another machine, and it works. What are my options here? Thanks for any help.

If you're sure it's not the card itself, then I would suggest you upgrade your OS. I don't know if X will make a difference here, but it's worth a shot. Also, you might want to try downloading the Apple USB card support software, I think it's supposed to handle problems like this one. What model is the machine anyway, maybe someone already had similar problems with it?
