My external USB hard drive has failed few days ago. First indications were inaccessibility errors when I tried to back up some data on it. After that I was able to see hard drive but when tried accessing data Windows showed error saying that hard drive is not formatted. This is not possible because I formatted it as NTFS and worked with it for some time. Is my external HDD dead or there is some other explanation?

I assume that you drive is fine but you have problem with corrupted data. That can happen from time to time with no apparent reason. Your best bet is to find some data recovery software and try to save your data. Some good choices are EasyRecovery, GETDATABACK ,Zero Assumption or free solution PC FILE INSPECTOR. If you succeed in getting back your data then format drive and use it again.
