It just sort of died on me. I get that annoying "non-system drive" error message at every startup, no matter what I do. I even tried booting from CD, but I get the exact same message! I tried to hear if the disks spin, and I can't hear a thing – there should be a low hum when it tries to access the HD, even if it can't boot from it, right? Has anyone else had this kind of problem with the Tecra laptop?

Actually, as far as I know, you should be able to hear the HD only when it's being read from or written to. If the system it doesn’t recognize it as bootable, I don’t think you'll hear much from it working. The CD, however, should be seen/heard spinning no matter what. Are you sure you've set your boot sequence correctly? It may be set to HD only, so it doesn't even try to access the bootable CD that you put in?
