At start-up, I get the following message: "Bad RTC Battery Appears, check CMOS", and then everything freezes. I don't know what this means I should do. The battery is fully charged AFAICT. Also, I think my laptop may be overheating, because it's hot to the touch at the bottom. I don't know if this heat could damage the battery somehow, is this possible? What do you think I should do?

I don't think these two issues are connected. The first thing to try is replacing the battery – if that helps, well and good, but if it doesn't, it's possible that your laptop's overheating is causing the freeze, and then is being falsely registered as a battery problem. Of course, it's possible you do have both problems on your hands. Personally, I'd take the laptop back to Toshiba and have it replaced or repaired, if the warranty is still valid of course.
