I got an ancient TP 600 off a guy I know, and decided to try upgrading it a little so that it's usable by today's standards. A strange thing happened when I added some RAM: It had 32 MB as a base, and to that I added 2 sticks of 128 MB. That, AFAICT, should be a total of 288 MB RAM. Instead, both BIOS and Windows show only 224 MB. It's not a big deal but still, I mean, WTF? How the hell can I come up exactly 64 MB short like that? I'm just curious.

I don't see what's so strange about it. One or more of the chips you added is partially corrupted. If you really want to localize the problem, remove stick 1, check if you've got the right amount of RAM (160 MB); if you do, you're holding the bad one. If not, repeat vice versa. Check the stick you pick out on another machine to confirm.
