I would like to change processor in computer by myself. I am fairly sure I will be able to accomplish this but I do not know what to think about thermal paste. Everyone is saying that it is highly important to apply thermal paste between processor and heatsink. Is it that important or people are just exaggerating? What is your experience with thermal paste?

Thermal paste importance can not be exaggerated. It is very important and processor will have at least 5 C higher average temperature if thermal paste is not applied. Thermal paste helps dissipating heat more efficiently and I would rally not recommend to assemble processor in motherboard without applying thermal paste on it.
