I have brought my laptop with me on a summer vacation. When I connected it to a cable modem I found out that network icon in systray has a yellow exclamation mark. I right clicked on it and choose repair but get an error saying that repair process failed because Windows is not able to renew my IP address. This is a strange connection problem and I do not what to do. Laptop worked fine at school and another laptop at my home is working fine.

You will definitely have to recheck network settings on laptop. Because you were using it in school I guess that you have some proxy server designated in your network connection settings. Open network connection settings set IP address and DNS to "obtain automatically" and delete any proxy, gateway and WINS settings if they exist. Connection problem should be solved now.
