Anyone know of some good ones? I've searched the web and found only a few, but they either don't fit my machine (which isn't exactly top of its class), or they involve a lot of manual editing of user_pref filesm which I'm not really all that eager to try. I was thinking more along the lines of downloading a small program, running it, and watching everything speed up. Any suggestions?

Firefox is open source, so there's plenty of custom builds and rewrites, many of them optimized for a particular platform. Try moox.ws/tech/mozilla/, see if anything fits your needs. Also, sort of an unusual tweak is compressing the .exe and .dll files, which makes them load quickly into the memory and decompress there, potentially speeding up the process.
