OK, the setup is this: I'm trying to connect to a Win 98 machine from an XP one in order to transfer a huge amount of files. I set up a share on the XP, gave access to everyone on the group, and went over to the 98 to get to it, but no luck: It first hits me with a password prompt for the network to get to the desktop – not knowing this mysterious pw, I just click cancel, and I'm there. However, when I try to access the XP box from there, I get yet another password prompt, even though I specifically left no passwords on the XP at all! I tried getting around this prompt for ages, and nothing worked. What am I doing wrong here?

If I understand your situation correctly, what you did wrong was skip that first password prompt for Microsoft Networking. It looks like it's asking you for a password, but it's actually letting you set one – the same one which it will ask form you later, when you try to access the XP machine. I'm not sure, but I think even a blank field would work there, but if you just click cancel, you haven't set a password at all (which won't stop the dumb thing from asking you for it later). Just enter any username/password, and repeat it when required.
