Would it be possible to have multiple machines access an external drive directly? Not at the same time, of course, but one at a time? I'm not really satisfied with the transfer speed over the local hub, so I was thinking it would be great if all clients could sort of share the ext. drive, instead of pulling the stuff all over the network. Could this be done through Firewire alone? TIA.

I'm not sure, but what kind of hub/network setup do you have? I mean, I don't know if you can realistically expect a speed improvement that would be noticeable. First, multiple machines accessing the same drives could not do this simultaneously (at least couldn't write to it), and the drive would need to skip to different sectors each time a different computer accesses it – this would be a major performance drop. I really don't know if you can hope for a speed increase with this, unless you have some extremely inefficient network ATM.
